What Is CORSIA
In the global effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the aviation sector has become one of the most watch deeply industries, as reported by Tempo.com, due to its significant contribution to carbon emissions. As the demand for air mobility and global economic growth continues to rise, the aviation industry is being called upon to find environmentally friendly and sustainable solutions that protect the environment without compromising operational efficiency.
One of the most important international initiatives in this context is CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation), a carbon emission reduction and offsetting scheme launched by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization). CORSIA aims to reducing level of CO₂ emissions from both international and domestic flights by promoting the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for net zero emission by 2050
CORSIA is the first global program specifically designed to address carbon emissions from international aviation. Launched by the ICAO, CORSIA aims to reducing CO₂ emissions in the aviation sector at 2020 levels and gradually reduce them over time.
The scheme has been implemented on a voluntary basis since 2021 and will become mandatory for all ICAO member states starting in 2027. CORSIA promotes the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and carbon offsetting schemes to compensate for unavoidable excess emissions
What is the purpose?
The scheme has been implemented on a voluntary basis since 2021 and will become mandatory for all ICAO member states starting in 2027. CORSIA promotes the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and carbon offsetting schemes to compensate for unavoidable excess emissions
How it works?
CORSIA requires the international aviation industry to:
- Monitor, report, and verify (MRV) CO₂ emissions from the fuel used.
- Offset emissions that exceed 2020 levels by purchasing carbon credits from emission reduction projects (such as reforestation, renewable energetic, ETC)
- Use certified Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) — such as those certified under the ISCC CORSIA scheme — to directly reduce carbon emissions.
The Role of SAF and the Importance of Certification
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is an alternative fuel produced from renewable sources such as agricultural waste, used cooking oil, or lignocellulosic materials. Compared to conventional fossil-based fuels, SAF can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80% over its lifecycle.
However, not all SAF is automatically recognized within the CORSIA framework. To meet ICAO requirements, SAF must:
- Deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.
- Be produced sustainably.
- Be traceable and verified through a certification system recognized by ICAO.
This is where Iscc Corsia certification becomes relevant. The aviation industry contributes about 2-3% of global emissions, and CORSIA aims to encourage the use of SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and investment in environmentally friendly projects.
What is ISCC CORSIA?
ISCC CORSIA (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification – CORSIA) is a sustainability certification system under ISCC and was recognized by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) to ensure that Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) meets the requirements of CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation).
This certification ensures that SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel):
- Is produced from sustainable sources
- Does not lead to deforestation
- Provides a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels
- Is fully traceable from raw materials to the final product
ISCC CORSIA also considers principles of human rights, worker protection, and social and economic sustainability throughout the fuel supply chain.
Benefit for ISCC Corsia Certification
- Compliance with International Regulations
- This certification ensures that the aviation fuel used meets ICAO requirements, allowing airlines to claim the SAF as part of fulfilling their CORSIA targets
- Transparency and Trust
- The SAF supply chain certified under ISCC CORSIA can be fully traced, from the source of raw materials to the end point of use. This provides confidence to both consumers and regulators.
- Support for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- By ensuring sustainable production practices, ISCC CORSIA supports the achievement of SDGs such as climate action, clean energy, and responsible consumption.
- Access to International Markets
- Fuel industry actors with ISCC CORSIA certification will find it easier to enter global markets, especially the international aviation market, which increasingly demands low-carbon fuels.
Certified Supply Chain
ISCC CORSIA covers the entire supply chain, including:
- Raw material producers (such as farmers, waste collectors)
- Suppliers and transporters of raw materials
- Biofuel/SAF producers
- Traders or exporters
- Airline operators
Every point in this chain must participate in the certification process and undergo annual audits to maintain system integrity.
