The growing amount of greenhouse gas emissions poses significant threats to the world, and we are running out of time to take action before the harm becomes irreversible. Indonesia has the potential to emerge as a prominent global leader in tackling the climate crisis, given its abundant reserves of renewable energy and critical mineral deposits such as nickel and copper, essential for decarbonization.
Interestingly, as President Joko Widodo pointed out during his opening remarks at the Indonesia International Sustainability Forum ISF 2024, the global climate challenges may never be solved unless these countries disregard their respective individual interests. “The climate change issue will never be resolved if the world continues to deal with it in an economic manner. It views and calculates this from its own perspective, and centers on its reckless self-interest.”
President Jokowi emphasized that he no longer needs to convey how dangerous climate change is, how urgent the energy transition is or the importance of aid.
According to him, what needs to be done in solving the problem of climate change is a collaborative and humanitarian approach between developed and developing countries, and the need to pay attention to the humanitarian aspect so that the process does not sacrifice the interests of the common people.
The coordinating minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, sounded a positive note in his closing remarks by commenting on the spirit of cooperation evident within ISF which provides hope for collective action against the climate emergency. Pandjaitan said: “I am extremely optimistic that we will continue the momentum of these last two days and translate into practical action what we have discussed.”
The Indonesia International Sustainability Forum (ISF) plays an important role as a platform for governments, companies and experts to share best practices in tackling the climate crisis and achieve their full potential.
At ISF 2024, Indonesia strengthened its position as a major player in sustainability, hosting a variety of climate initiatives. The two-day event saw the signing of 14 agreements focusing on topics like energy transition, carbon capture, and green transportation. These efforts aim to make Indonesia a global leader in sustainability for developing countries.
The goals for ISF 2024 include:
- G2G and/or B2B MoU signings on partnerships & collaborations in the
covered topics - Establishment of sustainability-related coalitions or initiatives with
concrete action plan - Whitepaper or report to advance green economy and sustainable
development for the global south economy - 100+ national & international businesses participating in the event
(exhibitions, workshops, seminars, etc.) - 10+ secondary schools or universities participating in seminars and
youth engagement programs
