CBQA Global Designated as Third-Party Entity for JCM
As the global community intensifies efforts to tackle climate change, international collaboration plays a vital role in accelerating carbon reduction initiatives. One such initiative is the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) a bilateral scheme between Indonesia and Japan designed to promote low-carbon technologies and generate verified emission reductions through cooperation.
What Is the JCM?
The Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is a framework established by the Government of Japan in partnership with various countries, including Indonesia, to facilitate the diffusion of low-carbon technologies, products, systems, and infrastructure. Through this mechanism, emission reductions achieved by projects implemented in Indonesia with Japanese support are jointly credited to both countries.
The JCM aims to support Indonesia in achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) while allowing Japan to contribute to global emissions reduction and fulfill its international commitments under the Paris Agreement. In addition to reducing emissions, the JCM brings valuable co-benefits such as technology transfer, energy efficiency improvements, and capacity building.
How the JCM Works
The JCM operates on principles of transparency, stakeholder inclusivity, and accountability. All proposed projects must go through a rigorous validation and verification process by an independent Third-Party Entity (TPE).
Project types under the JCM span a wide range of sectors including renewable energy, industrial energy efficiency, sustainable transportation, waste management, and agriculture. Selected projects may also receive financial support from the Japanese government through various funding mechanisms.
Governance by the Joint Committee
The JCM is overseen by a Joint Committee, made up of representatives from both Indonesia and Japan. This committee develops guidelines, approves methodologies, evaluates project proposals, and designates qualified organizations to act as TPEs.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan (MOFA), JCM has been developed with more than 20 partner countries since 2013. Indonesia is one of the most active and strategic partners in the implementation of JCM projects.
